Safe medications

What It's About
An over the counter medication is a non-prescription medication. Good examples are pain relievers or cold medications. During pregnancy, many women have backaches and headaches. It is natural to want these pains to go away, but with pregnancy, how you do this may need to change. When treating “colds” during pregnancy, you should always try symptomatic relief with fluids and rest first.

Always read the label of over the counter medications. When pregnant, it is preferred to use OTC’s with single active ingredients. Remedies that treat aches, fever, stuffy nose, sore throat and cough usually contain multiple active ingredients. Be selective, and only use what is absolutely necessary. For cough suppression, any preparation that contains guaifenesin or dextromethorphan may be used. Do not use preparations containing alcohol. Avoid iodine-containing products because of the risk to the fetal thyroid.
