Mom's diet & exercise

Did You Know?
  • Folic acid is important in the mother's diet before and throughout pregnancy.
  • The dietary requirement for folic acid doubles during a normal pregnancy. For those with a family history of neural tube defects (like spina bifida), even larger doses of folic acid are recommended.
  • Extra calcium is recommended for teenage and young pregnant women, those who struggle with eating disorders, practice strict vegan diets, or have severe lactose intolerance. This is to protect your bones. Dietary sources of calcium are preferred, but supplements should be used when adequate sources of calcium aren’t provided by the diet.
  • Babies whose mothers eat plenty of protein have more brain cells than do babies whose mothers eat less than three servings of protein foods each day during pregnancy.
