Labor & delivery

IV narcotics/analgesics
Many women choose to take the "edge" off of pain, or dull it, with intravenous narcotics. The most common ones used in labor are Nubain and Stadol. These medications will likely cause sedation and drowsiness. While there are always some risks with medications, these pain relievers are used regularly in laboring women with remarkable safety. These medications have a short duration of action, which means that their effects don’t last too long. If given early in labor, they may decrease the strength and frequency of contractions.
