Be Safe in the Car and While Traveling
Proper safety belt use is important during pregnancy. Lap and shoulder belts are best and should be used all the time, even on the way to the hospital to give birth. The lap portion of the belt should lie against your lower abdomen, below your stomach, near your thighs. Do not fasten the belt over your stomach, as in an accident this could cause injury. The shoulder belt should lie between your breasts and not chafe your neck. All belts should fit snugly.

Take caution while traveling. Most women find it more comfortable to travel in the second trimester than in the first or third. If you have some other medical condition and are pregnant, traveling far from your health care providers is not recommended. If you are leaving the area or the country it is best to ask your doctor to recommend someone to care for you in the area you will be visiting, should you need anything.

Tips for traveling or vacationing while pregnant

  • take frequent breaks
  • walk around or stretch every half-hour
  • wear comfortable clothing
  • eat frequent snacks
  • get enough sleep
  • be sure to check with your doctor about any medication you might take for sea or airsickness.
  • avoiding traveler’s diarrhea -it could lead to dehydration.
  • drink bottled water and use caution in selecting foods - avoid those that may be contaminated with bacteria or other organisms.
  • carry a copy of your medical record and prenatal care record with you
  • if you are flying in an airplane, arrange for an aisle seat so that you can get to the bathroom easily and move around every half-hour or so.
  • most airlines suggest not flying after the 36-week point
  • the metal detectors in airports will not harm your fetus
