When to call the doctor

Shortness of breath at rest
Labored or difficult breathing may be a sign of decreased blood flow to the lungs. Some of this should be expected in later pregnancy. As the uterus rises higher, there is decreased space for the lungs to expand which causes that feeling of breathlessness.

However, on the rare occasion that shortness of breath occurs suddenly with painful breathing or dizziness, this requires emergency medical evaluation.
