When to call the doctor

Pain and redness in calf
Leg cramping can be a sign of several things – from the need to stretch your muscles to a shortage of certain dietary nutrients. Calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus shortages are the usual culprits for the ‘Charlie horse'. Talk to your physician about your diet, and the possible need to add some dairy products or green leafy vegetables. Stretching and flexing exercises may also be helpful to avoid this sort of leg cramping - try stretching the calf muscle completely; fully flex the foot forward, backward, and by rotation of the ankle to get the best stretch. Pressure stretches along a wall or floor can aid you in your stretching.

Leg cramping that is accompanied by redness in the calf may indicate an infection, inflammation of the blood vessels or blood clot. This always needs to be checked out by your health care provider.
