When to call the doctor

Abdominal pain
Pregnancy is not the time to ignore pain. Always talk to your doctor about the pain you are experiencing. Be certain to provide a thorough history of the complaint to your physician – especially if this pain is related to trauma (like a fall, traffic accident, or domestic abuse) or a mistake in taking medications (like prenatal vitamins/iron supplements), or use of recreational or street drugs (like cocaine).

Describe if other symptoms are present, like:

  • fever
  • decreased fetal movements
  • nausea, vomiting
  • pain when taking a deep breath
  • pain with certain movements
  • raised blood pressure
  • frequent nosebleeds or bruising
  • tenderness on a certain area of the abdomen
  • a bump pushing out near the belly button
  • heartburn
  • shortness of breath
  • dizziness
  • visual changes
  • increased vaginal discharge
  • diarrhea or constipation

Abdominal pain can be associated with a serious pregnancy condition, like pre-eclampsia, or an unrelated yet serious condition such as appendicitis or gallbladder inflammation. Complaints relating to abdominal pain and tenderness require medical evaluation.
