Treatment of Lyme Disease
Antibiotics given in the early stages usually result in rapid and complete recovery.
In a few patients, symptoms of persisting infection may continue or recur, making additional antibiotic therapy necessary.
Permanent damage to joints or nervous system may develop in late, chronic Lyme disease. This is rare but has been identified in patients in whom Lyme disease was unrecognized in the early stages or for whom initial treatment was unsuccessful.
