A few tips for avoiding UTIs
- Drink lots of fluids – 8 to 10 glasses of water - every day.
- Drinks with higher acidity, like unsweetened cranberry juice, may help keep the pH of the urine too low for bacteria to thrive – try it and see if it works for you.
- Empty your bladder regularly – don’t hold it!
- Make it a habit to empty your bladder before and after sex – this helps to flush away any bacteria near the urethra.
- The tissue around the urethra and vagina can be irritated if you begin intercourse before the vagina is well lubricated. Slow down the pace, and make certain that you’re fully ready before any penetration.
- Never insert anything into the vagina after it has been in contact with the anus.
- Use care when wiping to move the tissue from front to back – so that the rectal bacteria aren’t swept forward near the urethra. .
- Wash your hands after using the bathroom, changing your sanitary protection, and before and after sex.
- Change pads and tampons frequently – this is another source for bacteria growth.
- Wear loose clothing – wedgies aren’t good for pelvic health!!
