Sexual Health

Vaginal dryness
Lower estrogen levels decrease the blood supply to the vagina and the nerves and glands surrounding it. This makes delicate tissues thinner, drier, and less able to produce secretions to comfortably lubricate before and during intercourse. The vagina becomes dryer, less elastic, and more prone to irritation.

Most women find it helpful to extend foreplay and use an additional lubricant for sexual activity. Water-soluble lubricants are preferable in alleviating some of the discomfort associated with intercourse. Many of these over the counter products, including Replens, Aqualube, Astroglide and K-Y jelly, are very helpful and simulate “natural” lubrication. Patience is key in dealing with this problem. Spend more time on foreplay. Use lubrication when touching sensitive areas – dry rubbing can be painful. Oral sex can be very pleasurable and the additional saliva may be especially helpful when lubrication is limited.

Hormone replacement therapy or hormone creams applied directly to the vaginal area, when recommended by your health care provider, may help with some of these symptoms.
