Ginkgo Biloba
Ginkgo is an herb often promoted for aiding circulatory problems. It is thought to improve blood flow by dilating (or opening up) blood vessels. Deficits (lapses) in memory and concentration may also improve because of its effect on the blood flow to the cerebrum (the “thinking” part of the brain).
There is new interest in this product since research with Alzheimer’s patients was conducted in the United States. In this study, there was a group of Alzheimer patients given Ginkgo every day, and another group that was not given Ginkgo. They compared the effects of the Ginkgo and the progression of the disease symptoms. In half the patients taking Ginkgo, there seemed to be a delay in how fast the symptoms worsened.
More research will need to continue in this area, as presently there is nothing to suggest that ginkgo prevents the onset of Alzheimer's disease.
Here is an important not:
For those taking blood thinners or daily aspirin therapy, consult with your health care provider before adding Ginkgo to your regimen. The blood dilating effects of Ginkgo may interact with blood thinning medication.
