Two reasons your health care provider may decide to prescribe HRT or ERT are :
- to relieve hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness
- to help protect against osteoporosis.
Bone loss begins in one’s 30s in men and women, but speeds up in women after menopause. In fact, half of all bone loss will occur during the first 3 to 6 years following menopause. Small-boned, thin, white women are at highest risk, but early menopause (before age 45), low calcium intake, cigarette smoking, and a sedentary lifestyle also increase risk. You should discuss these and other risk factors for osteoporosis with your health care provider.
