Antioxidants
Antioxidants work to combat oxygen free radicals. Oxygen free radicals are a byproduct of certain energy producing pathways in the body. They also occur in situations that increase “oxidative stress,” like smoking, sun exposure, radiation and other environmental exposures. These free radicals can be harmful, especially in large amounts. While the body has a defense system to prevent or counteract oxygen free radicals, it doesn’t manage to attack every free radical. Some scientists believe that as we grow older, the accumulation of these substances causes the eventual breakdown and damage to cells, tissues and organs.

Antioxidants work to relieve oxidative stress, and therefore slow down the formation of oxygen free radicals. Some antioxidants occur naturally in the body, and others come from food sources – especially ones rich in Vitamin C, E and beta-carotene. Experts agree that the best sources of the vitamins are directly from food and not from supplements, so eat your fruits and veggies! Five servings a day from this food group is recommended.
