How to reduce your lifetime risk
Regular physical activity can help you reduce your risk of heart disease, specifically coronary artery disease. Being active helps women take off extra pounds, helps to control blood pressure, lessens a diabetic's need for insulin, and boosts the level of "good" HDL-cholesterol. Some studies also show that being inactive increases the risk of heart attack.

The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute recommend the following Heart Healthy Action Plan:

  • Quit smoking

  • Cut back on foods high in fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol

  • Check blood pressure levels

  • Get more exercise

  • Maintain a healthy weight, lose weight if you are overweight
