Emotional Health

Insomnia and aging
Although the exact numbers are not yet known, it has been estimated that more than half of people 65 and older who live at home and about two-thirds of those who live in long-term care facilities suffer from some sort of sleep disturbance. Problems in sleep and daytime wakefulness disrupt not only the lives of older persons but also those of their families and caregivers. Many of these people are using prescription and over-the-counter medications that have not yet been proven safe or effective for this use. Nor has it been established to what extent drugs contribute to, or alleviate, sleep problems. It is necessary to understand the causes of these disorders and to develop better treatment strategies, including non-medication methods.
