Common Gynecological Problems & Procedures
LEEP procedure
When abnormal cells or tissue are identified on pap smear and confirmed with colposcopy, there are several methods to remove the abnormal tissue. They include cryosurgery or “freezing” of the cervix, laser removal or “burning” and LEEP procedures.
LEEP, loop electrosurgical excision procedure, uses a tiny electrical wire that acts like a very sharp scalpel to remove the abnormal areas. It is attached to an electrosurgical generator that emits a painless electrical current to quickly and safely cut away the infected tissue. The electrical current emitted from the loop passes through the tissue cells in the immediate area of the loop wire. As a result, these cells heat rapidly and burst (on a microscopic scale), separating the tissue as the loop wire is moved through the cervix.
All of these treatments may be done in your doctor's office. If the procedure is done with the wire (LEEP), your cervix will be numbed with a medicine before the procedure is started. After you are treated, you may have some cramping or other side effects. Your doctor can explain these effects to you.
For some types of more advanced abnormalities revealed by colposcopy and biopsy, your doctor may refer you to a cancer specialist in gynecology.
