Common Gynecological Problems & Procedures

Endometrial biopsy
This procedure is done, usually in the doctor’s office, to obtain a sample of the endometrial lining. It involves the insertion of a plastic pipelle (a small flexible plastic straw), thru the opening of the cervix, into the uterus. Using suction, the pipelle plucks off a sample of tissue from the uterine lining and it is removed for laboratory examination.

These are often recommended to evaluate abnormal uterine bleeding, infertility problems, and chronic infections. After the procedure, you may be asked to rest quietly for a few minutes, because some women experience lightheadedness if they move around too quickly. This kind of manipulation of the cervix and uterus can cause vasovagal symptoms, like racing heartbeat, clamminess, and feeling faint.

Possible adverse effects include mild discomfort, spotting, occasional infection, and rarely a perforation in the uterus (a hole through the lining of the uterus).
