Endometrial ablation
Endometrial ablation is a surgical procedure that can be used and preferred, as an alternative to a hysterectomy in order to control abnormal uterine bleeding. This procedure involves the use of a YAG laser or electrical current, or thermal balloon that is introduced into the uterine cavity via a hysteroscope. The energy is then used to "ablate" or destroy those cells within the lining of the uterus (the endometrium) that are responsible for the abnormal bleeding.
Endometrial ablation is often used to treat women with abnormal uterine bleeding who have not responded well to hormone treatment or other therapies, when endometrial carcinoma has been ruled out. This may be a way to avoid hysterectomy in women who have persistent and moderate to heavy bleeding.
