Common Gynecological Problems & Procedures
D&C
This stands for dilatation and curettage. The dilatation involves the widening of the cervical opening so that a curette may be passed into the uterine body. The curettage is the scraping, using the spoon-shaped curette, of the inside lining of the uterus to remove areas of the lining that are overgrown.
D & C is no longer the common procedure it once was. It is mostly used today to treat miscarriages and perform abortions. Because new and improved ways to evaluate the uterine lining are available, procedure like endometrial biopsy and hysteroscopy have replaced D&C as a diagnostic tool in many cases.
