The risks for breast cancer
Every woman is at risk for breast cancer. Over the course of a lifetime, each woman faces a 1 in 8 chance of developing breast cancer. There is a long list of “risk factors” that may raise an individual’s risks. These include:
  • early age to start menstruating (before age 12 yrs)
  • late age at menopause
  • first birth after age 30
  • no childbirth
  • breastfeeding for less than 2 years (or not at all)
  • obesity
  • family history
  • personal history of “lumpy breasts” or previous breast cancer
  • certain ethnic groups
  • regular drinking of alcoholic beverages
  • hormone replacement therapy (longterm)
  • radiation exposure
