Bone health is a term used to define a lifetime commitment to taking care of your bones. No matter what your age, it is vital that you take steps to protect the health of your bones. Ideally, it should start when you’re young and continue on through all of your adult years in order to lessen the effect of the natural bone loss that occurs as you age.

But even if you’re out of your teen years, it’s never too late. There are some basic steps that women of all ages should follow in order to promote optimal bone health:

  • Eat foods rich in calcium and vitamin D, such as low-fat milk, yogurt, and cheese.
  • Do weight-bearing exercise, such as walking, hiking, and stair climbing.
  • If you are postmenopausal, consider estrogen replacement.
  • Consider using calcium supplements if you don’t get enough calcium from your diet.
  • Don't smoke.
  • Limit your intake of alcoholic beverages.
