Reducing the risks of falls in your home
Most fractures (broken bones) result from accidental injuries and falls. To reduce this risk, make certain that your home and familiar places are safety zones by:
- anchoring scatter rugs to the floor
- securing loose wires and electric cords away from walking areas
- lighting stairways and walking paths
- securing stair railings and treads
- keeping a flashlight and night-light near your bedside in case you get up at night
- installing non-skid tape and grab bars in tub/shower/toilet areas
- keeping floor clear of clutter and cleaning up spills immediately
- avoiding wet floors and snow, ice and rain-soaked walkways
- wearing sturdy, low-heeled shoes
- using canes, braces, supports, and walkers when recommended
- taking your time and asking for help when needed
- avoiding alcoholic beverages and medication which impair your coordination and balance.
