Tampon Safety
There is some controversy regarding the potential adverse effects of certain ingredients in tampons. In general, the following concerns have been raised:
- deodorants and fragrances in tampons may be irritating to some women
- more absorbent tampons tend to have increasing amounts of synthetic fibers, like rayon. These fibers may contribute to creating a favorable environment for the bacteria responsible for causing toxic shock syndrome.
- the tampon whitening process (or some aspect of its manufacture) leaves a small, residual amount of dioxin in the material. The effects of repeated exposure to this chemical over many menstrual cycles is not known.
It may be prudent to use tampons that have unbleached, 100% natural fibers (cotton). Change tampons regularly. Alternate use of tampons with pads, when this is acceptable and convenient.
Discuss any concerns you have related to tampon use with your health care provider.
