Stages of breast development
Breast development in young girls can begin anywhere between the ages of 8 and 13, on average. The standard measure for breast development in young girls entering puberty is called the Tanner stages. This scale identifies the stages of breast development.

Stage 1: a flat breasts with slight elevation of one or both nipples.

Stage 2: the breast bud stage characterized by elevation of the breast and nipple into a small mound. The diameter of the areola will also increase.

Stage 3: growth of breast tissue; fat and glandular tissue within the breast increases.

Stage 4: the adolescent breast further develops with the flattening of the areola over the breast tissue. The final three stages will produce more enlargement and definition of the breasts' shape until they reach full maturity at stage five.
