Dr. Canavan received his undergraduate degree from St. John's University, magna cum laude in 1984. He earned his medical degree from the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn in 1988, then completed his internship and residency at Staten Island University Hospital in 1992. Board certified in Maternal Fetal Medicine Dr. Canavan also received an MS in Clinical Research at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and completed a fellowship in Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh Magee Women's Hospital.

Dr. Canavan is a member of serveral medical societies including Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine, American Medical Association, American College Obstetrics & Gynecology, and Health Information Management Systems Society. He has practiced in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and at Greenwich Hospital for 15 years prior to opening his current practice.
