Manchester OB/GYN Welcomes Midwifery
Manchester OB/GYN, a member of Physicians for Women's Health, is proud to offer midwifery services. Since midwifery is a relatively new concept to this area, the following was prepared to answer some of the most commonly asked questions. If you still have questions about midwifery please feel free to ask one of the doctors or midwives.
Who are CNMs and what do they do?
Certified Nurse-Midwives are registered nurses that have advanced education in the two disciplines of nursing and midwifery, have graduated from a program accredited by the American College of Nurse-midwives, and have passed a national certification exam. Here at Manchester OB/GYN the two midwives, Mary Guinan and Jennifer Schirmer, perform routine gynecological exams for women of all ages. They provide prenatal care and see patients on an as needed basis. Mary and Jennifer are all credentialed at Manchester Memorial Hospital where they manage labor and attend births.
What will be different if a midwife cares for me?
This is the most commonly asked question of the midwives. The midwifery philosophy focuses on supporting the natural process of labor and birth. The midwives stay with women as much as possible during labor, providing support and encouragement. Midwives employ many different types of labor support, including birthing balls, hydrotherapy, ambulation, TENS, breathing techniques and guided imagery. For women who want to try to have as natural a birth as possible, midwifery can be very helpful. If a woman requires pain medication or an epidural, the midwife is able to provide this as well. Since midwives do not perform surgery, a physician is on call at all times with the midwife. If the labor and birth progress normally the midwife will be the primary health care provider. If a problem should arise, however, the physicians will be readily available in the event they are needed.
How do I know if I will have a midwife?
The midwives are on call Monday night from 5:00 p.m. to Thursday night at 5:00 p.m. and three weekends a month. They care for all laboring women during that time. If you are especially interested in a midwifery approach to your labor and birth, please discuss it with them during one of your prenatal visits. The midwives at Manchester OB/GYN are very committed to providing this type of care and will work with you on developing a birth plan to meet your individual needs. Our goal is to provide the best care and variety of options for women. We at Manchester OB/GYN believe this includes midwifery. If you have any further questions please feel free to ask any of our physicians or midwives.
